What motivated you to become a mentor?
The desire to give back some of the experience gained over the years, and hopefully provide the next generation with some fore knowledge that may assist them on their future journey.
What activities did you organise for your mentee?
Initially getting to know the student meetings, leading to a mini SWOT workshop, and finally leading to a mini project designed to explore their own depth of knowledge and provide a taste of a real requirement.
Finally mini interviews to explore various techniques and cultivate self awareness and confidence.
What did you find most enjoyable?
I think for me this has to be the satisfaction of knowing that a difference was made, and that the student has a more enlightened outlook before they venture forth into a career.
Would you do it again?
Most definitely.
What advice would you give to potential mentors?
Consider what you have learned over your career, and the mistakes you have made and look to pass this valuable information onto others starting out on their careers in order that the mistakes you made, they don't.
What were the outcomes for you/your organisation?
For myself, the sense of giving something back, and knowing I made a difference.
For my company, the prestige of being seen as a mentor to the University of Derby.
