I was born in Derby of parents who were refugees at the end of the Second World War and have been very fortunate with the opportunities that have presented themselves to me.
I am aware how difficult it can be for people from ethnic minority backgrounds and wanted to share some of my expertise with them. I wanted to give back to the University based in my home city some of the good things I have received.
The best bit was making it through the programme and the fact that my mentee stuck it out!
The worst bit was the concern that I was providing my mentee with what she needed.
But I would do it again; it has been very satisfying, though very demanding.
I would advise other mentors to listen to what your mentee wants. You can guide and assist, but you have to refrain from the belief that you have all the right answers (even if you think you do).
The outcome for me was realising all the talents my mentee had and wishing she could come and organise me as she was juggling so many things at work, home and university.
