Allayne Broom, Marriott Hotels
What motivated you to become a mentor?
Allayne Broom
Marriott Hotels
I chose to become a mentor because I have always enjoyed sharing my experience and knowledge to develop young talent and offer insight and guidance on how to succeed in the hospitality industry. I find nothing more rewarding than seeing someone I have developed succeed to achieve their goals.
What activities did you organise for your mentee?
The meetings held are well structured and so far we have covered motivation of associates, performance management of associates and looked at how Marriott leaders engage associates to serve the customers. We have also looked at what we do to offer value added extras and pre arrival planning.
My Mentee has also met with my Front Office Manger to gain practical insight on how the reservation process flows from first phone call to customer arrival experience. My mentee has also had a meeting with my Conference and Events Manager to discuss the Marriott graduate programme (he is an ex graduate)
I have reviewed and given feedback on my Mentees CV. We also have some work shadowing planned which will involve attendance at the weekly payroll meeting and the weekly sales strategy meeting.
Further along the line we will be carrying out some mock interviews to further prepare my mentee for his first interviews.
What did you find most enjoyable?
I found my mentees obvious passion for service inspiring and hope he succeeds in his goal to join the Marriott graduate programme
Would you do it again?
I will continue to do this programme.
What advice would you give to potential mentors?
Push your mentee to learn and follow up with an action plan so that your mentee has clear guidance. Have fun as well - learning is fun.
What were the outcomes for you/your organisation?
It gives me an opportunity to look at what is being taught to the new talent pool that will be coming into the market place
