What you can expect from the Career Development Centre

A range of information, advice and guidance (IAG) services, free of charge to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University, and to graduates of the University up to three years following completion of their course.

The service that we provide is designed to meet the AGCAS Code of Practice on Guidance and service users can expect a confidential, impartial and professional service.

We are committed to equal opportunities and we are keen to assist and support service users with physical or other disabilities, and additional needs, such as dyslexia.

Students and graduates can expect the following commitment from us:

  • A one hour guidance appointment with a Careers Adviser within two weeks of request
  • Access to a Careers Adviser every week day through our daily drop-in service, which can be booked in person, by telephone or online
  • A response to an email or telephone enquiry within two working days
  • Access to current careers information that reflects the requirements of the graduate labour market
  • Access to the Careers website and UDo career planning tools and resources, including videos, questionnaires and psychometrics, labour market information
  • Access to current local, national and international work experience, placement/internship and graduate vacancies
  • Part-time and temporary paid work opportunities

We are also committed to the provision of a range of services and opportunities to support the development of employability skills relevant to the needs of the graduate recruiters.

We offer the following services to support student employability:

  • Subject specialist Careers Advisers attached to each subject area
  • A Volunteering team
  • An Employer Mentoring Scheme
  • University of Derby Award (UDA) programme for Employability, Leadership and Management, endorsed by the Institute for Leadership Management (ILM)
  • Employer presentations and workshops
  • Volunteering and Working Overseas fairs
  • Job search and CV workshops
  • Career management skills workshops
  • Curriculum-based career planning lectures and seminars
  • Interview and assessment centre preparation

What we expect from you

  • Be punctual for any appointment or event/workshop that you have booked online or arranged with CDC staff
  • To notify the CDC by telephone or email to cancel an appointment, or your place at an event or workshop, if you are unable to attend
  • Spend some time preparing for your appointment
  • Read and respond appropriately to email and UDo messages from CDC staff
  • Act upon any instructions you have received prior to an event or workshop
  • Play an active part and contribute to any activity you have arranged with the CDC
  • Behave in a responsible manner so as to not offend staff, employers or other service users
  • Take action on career planning following advice, information and guidance provided by CDC staff
  • Provide feedback on CDC services

Opening hours

Monday - Thursday 9am - 5pm

Friday 9am - 4.30pm

Daily drop-in service, 20 minutes bookable appointments 10am - 2pm
