The future of Derby

There's a huge amount of investment going into Derby at the moment

The city is over halfway through its £2 billion masterplan, which includes:

  • £340m Westfield shopping centre
  • 12-screen Cinema de Lux
  • QUAD arts centre with three cinemas
  • Re-development of the Cathedral Quarter, including a boutique hotel and gardens
  • Top new hotel complete with its own casino
  • £16m Bold Lane retail and office development
  • Cathedral Green park overlooking the river.

Derby is home to some of the biggest companies in the UK, including Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Bombardier, and that means more job opportunities for you when you graduate. Rolls-Royce alone has employed over 100 graduates in the last three years.

The Government investment of £500 million in the Midland Main Line rail route between Sheffield and London is also a great boost to Derby's businesses and future economy.

Supporting the economy

The University of Derby is a key contributor to the local economy. Our overall contribution is over £240m, and we employ nearly 2,000 people throughout the region, contributing to the creation of an additional 1,700 jobs and creating £87.5m through this employment.

We spend over £47m in the regional and wider economy, with our students contributing £105.5m to the regional economy.

"There have been few winners among the UK's industrial cities in recent years, but Derby stands out for the strength of its local economy."
Jonathan Guthrie, Financial Times

A city that nurtures business

Derby is the UK's highest performing city for job creation, and almost 12% of our workforce are in high technology professions (design, technology and innovation in aerospace, rail technology and IT) - that's more than any other city in the UK. We boast the highest average salaries in the Midlands, and the highest proportion of graduates in the workforce compared to any other UK city.

A great place to make a home

With its robust economy, central location, multi-cultural community and standard of living that is more affordable than many UK cities, Derby is an ever-improving place to live and work. It has all the  benefits of a city, whilst still being close to the Peak District national park and its miles of beautiful English countryside.

Over 80% of England's population is within a 2-hour drive, and with East Midlands International airport on your doorstep and Paris only 4 hours away, the whole world is just waiting for you to find it!
