What is The Oasis?
The Oasis aims to regroup the 'international' members of the community living in Buxton and surrounding area in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. We hold social meetings where members can share, learn, laugh and experience what it is like to be part of one of the most cosmopolitan towns in Derbyshire!
We aim to discover one another’s cultures and habits. We also aim to welcome new residents from foreign nationalities in Buxton to help and support them discovering the town, and provide friendly advice about administrative duties, education, social gatherings and more.
There are so many nationalities represented in Buxton
Claire Belkadi, the University of Derby’s former International Development Manager, is from France and arrived in Buxton in April 2012. She came up with the idea for the Oasis after being amazed at how many Buxton residents came from abroad.
“In less than a year, I met friends from Brazil, Romania, Mexico, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, France, Spain, and Sweden…not forgetting the International student community at the University representing over 30 nationalities from countries such as China, Indonesia, Uruguay, Nepal, Zimbabwe, India, South Korea, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Nigeria and more !”.
Who can join the Oasis meetings?
The Oasis welcomes everybody! From British citizens interested in meeting international people to members of the international community, whatever country you are from...whether you have been in UK for 10 years and over or 10 days…we’ll be glad to meet you ...University of Derby International and EU students are welcome and so are children .
How do we keep in touch?
