Real World Learning
The University of Derby Buxton Campus provides a unique environment attracting students from all over the world. Hands-on, practical learning alongside traditional lectures and access to placements, volunteering and work experience, ensures Buxton students are equipped with the real world experience employers demand.
The University of Derby is recognised as a Top 10* UK university for degrees in Tourism, Hospitality, Events. All Events Management students get involved in organising functions as part of the University’s real-world, hands-on style of learning – including helping to organise an international conference on industrial heritage.
Our Culinary Arts students have won placements at a range of prestigious restaurants and venues including Claridges of London, Gleneagles and the Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons - the Oxfordshire hotel and restaurant run by celebrity chef Raymond Blanc OBE. This kind of experience, on top of their degree gives our students the edge in the jobs market.
Our Spa degrees have been hailed as the best in the world by Swedish spa expert Anna Bjurstam. In 2014, a leading spa resort in the Arabian Gulf flew a team of its managers to the UK to attend a Buxton industry day so they could recruit the latest graduates.
Tourism students work all over the world – from hotels in China to running sports trips on a Pacific island. “Our courses give students the opportunity not just to see the world, but to see how the real world operates, which has given the University of Derby Buxton an enviable reputation for employability among new graduates.” (Peter Wiltshier, Tourism Lecturer).
Sports lecturers at Buxton are at the cutting edge of developments, whether it is working with BMX world champions at the Manchester Velodrome or training the judo silver medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
