“Derby offers excellent support services to disabled students”
– Thomas Briggs
Tom has won The Irene Lewis Award for 2009. He studied BA (Hons) Human Resource Managment.
Winning the award
I'm honoured to win this award because it highlights my achievements in successfully achieving a 2.1, despite being severely sight impaired.
I chose to study at Derby as it was one of the few universities offering the exact course I wished to study with the option to complete a work placement. It also offers excellent support services to disabled students.
A relevant degree
I'm now an Equality and Diversity Assistant at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, so the content of my degree has been very pertinent. I've also developed many skills within my degree such as communication, data analysis, team working and interpersonal which I use daily within my job.
The year's work placement I completed as part of my degree also helped to prepare me for my future career, as the challenges I faced and overcame increased my experience and boosted my confidence.
After successfully studying this degree at the Derby, I would advise other students to always take advantage of the development opportunities available to you at Derby, and to constantly look for ways to improve your work. I plan to complete further study and develop myself further within my career in the future.
