Piotr won The Arthur Ashby Award for 2009. He studied Business Management (Joint Honours).

Winning the award

Winning The Arthur Ashby Award was a total surprise for me. As English is not my first language, I did not expect my dissertation to be good enough, so you can imagine my amazement when I got the letter regarding my award. That proves exactly that Derby gives equal opportunities to all students, from different backgrounds.

Why Derby?

Derby has the reputation of being a friendly institution and that was a very important aspect for me as an international student. During my three years I've created very important relationships, gained knowledge and experience and learned more about myself. I've also really improved my English too.

The course

Through the Joint Honours scheme, I was able to design my own course. I'm an entrepreneur type of person and so prefer to work on my own projects, and I had the chance to choose those modules which were particularly useful for me.

I've also had the opportunity to get involved in other things and I've not only been taking part in projects like the Mentoring scheme but I've also been awarded with the University of Derby Award endorsed by the Institute of Leadership and Management. Now I'm working hard on my MA Management course and plan to finish that later this year.

My advice

I would say that you should meet people and create relationships. Networking is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects in business, and students should be aware that having the opportunity of meeting people from different countries from the entire world gives a serious competitive advantage.

It's also important to learn for your own development and not just to achieve good grades. The skills and knowledge you'll gain on the course are so important.
