Why Business Management at Derby?

I decided to study for a degree in Business Management as I have always found business interesting, and enjoyed studying A Level Business Studies at college.

I felt that a degree would provide much more career opportunities and help me achieve my long term ambition of owning my own business.

The course

The work has been challenging at times but rewarding. The degree covers all areas of business and it has been interesting to learn about each at a more advanced level. Lecturers helped to make it interesting as they were passionate about their subjects and very knowledgeable, they also used up to date case studies and applied the lectures and theories to current topics and events.

A module I particularly enjoyed was one in which we were given a detailed case study of a business and given the task of analysing the business and suggesting improvements. As a small group we then gave a presentation, as if to the owners of the business, outlining its current standing and performance, the suggested improvements and the benefits of the improvements.

As part of the final, individual write up we each produced a project plan spanning around 18 months detailing how the improvements would be implemented, time-frames and what would be needed for each. I found this very interesting as project management is an area I would like to move into once I have graduated.

The lecturers are fantastic!

The lecturers have been very friendly and extremely supportive and have definitely played a large part in helping me achieve good grades.

It's not all about studying

As well as studying I have also enjoyed an active social life and have made many, many new friends, especially in halls of residence in my first year. I would recommend a degree at Derby to anyone.

The lecturers and teaching are fantastic and it's easy to have an active social life.

My work placement has been great experience

I am currently completing my work placement year, this is optional on the course but I felt it was an excellent opportunity to gain some real world experience and earn some money while I'm doing it. I am working for the University as part of the marketing team.

I have been given a great deal of responsibility and have had the chance to do many things, including design new websites, arrange photo shoots and film shoots, get posters, adverts and stands produced, speak at open days and much more. I feel like a valued member of the team and the placement has greatly improved both my professional and personal skills. The knowledge gained from my placement will definitely help me in my final year. It is also nice to get paid!

Would I recommend Derby?

Definitely! Derby is a great university. The teaching and facilities are excellent. There's a good balance with social life and you get the opportunity to mix with people from other cultures.
