Derby Business School Student Profile Karl Baker

“All of my lecturers have relevant industry experience relating to the modules they teach, which helps my learning as they can give examples of what they're teaching, showing how it would really happen in business”

Karl Baker is studying the HND Business and Management. He's currently in his second year.

Achieving my career goals

After I finished my A-Levels I took a gap year which I spent trying to work out what I wanted from a career. After working in a variety of different temporary jobs I realised I would never truly get what I wanted in terms of responsibility and career progression without first getting a higher education.

Challenges and successes

The modules I've covered so far have been very interesting and challenging. I especially enjoy taking the modules where I learn new business skills.  I also enjoy the challenge of getting to grips with a subject I've previously struggled with, for me it's marketing, and achieving a higher grade than I expected.

All of the lecturers have been very helpful and approachable from day one of the course, whether I was asking for advice on report writing, feedback on my assignments or just had a question to ask. All of my lecturers also have relevant industry experience relating to the modules they teach which helps my learning as they can give examples of what they're teaching, showing how it would really happen in business.

Living in Derby

I spent the first year of my course living in student halls.  It was great as it allowed me to gain independence living away from home, make loads of new friends and experience university life as much as I could.

Support facilities on campus

The library at the Kedleston Road campus is very good with excellent facilities, study areas and a wide range of textbooks. There are also plenty of empty computer labs available throughout the day so there's plenty of opportunity to get work done between lessons.

What's next?

As I'm about to finish my HND, I've already applied to do my top up in Business and Management which converts my HND into a full BA honours degree. Although the HND is a widely recognised qualification I decided that it would definitely be worthwhile to spend another year at University to get a full degree, making myself more employable for when I leave and apply to a graduate scheme.

Would I recommend Derby?

I'd definitely recommend anyone to study a business course at the University of Derby because of the high marks the business school gets from outside assessors, and my own enjoyable experience from studying here.
