Derby Business School Student Profiles Dale Spademan

“I would recommend Derby as a great university. I've made some great friends and I found the lecturers to be very helpful and encouraging, especially towards 'mature' students who had been out of higher education”

Dale won The Toyota Award for Best BA (Hons) Business Studies Independent Study for 2009.

Winning the award

I was very surprised to win the award. I had heard about the award when studying, and didn't think my dissertation would be up to the standard, so it was great to see my work had been picked and appreciated.

Why Derby?

I chose Derby because I live in Heanor and needed somewhere local. Also, the flexibility offered by Derby allowed me to study part time and so I could fit the course around my job. I had previously studied an HND in Business at West Notts College and so was able to top this up to a degree.

Putting it all into practice

As I already work full time I could definitely see the benefit during my study and also see some of the theories actually working in the 'real world', as well as being able to argue against some of the theories from experience. This is something I wouldn't have been able to have done had I gone straight from A -levels into a degree without having 'work experience'. I work as a sales manager and the research I did for my dissertation proved very valuable in my day to day work.

In the future I'd like to use what I've learned to further my career and I'd like to consider studying further, perhaps to masters level. But right now I wish to concentrate on my current role and gain more experience.

My advice

I would recommend Derby as a great university. I've made some great friends and I found the lecturers to be very helpful and encouraging, especially towards 'mature' students who had been out of higher education. It was a steep learning curve at first but well worth it.
