“The degree was a great springboard for my career and I have since built on these studies since graduating. I felt it gave me an edge when competing in the job market”
– Carly Brown
Carly graduated in 2003 with BA (Hons) Human Resource Management, she nows works for Derby County Football Club.
I've been the HR & People Development Manager at Derby County Football Club since August 2007.
I'm responsible for the HR needs of all staff. The agenda is very varied, from reward and recognition, performance management, pay and benefits, employee relations and employment law issues, training and development and organisational development. Last year's we introduced a training programme that resulted in more than half of our staff receiving external accredited training courses, which in turn has helped build morale, motivation and teams across the organisation.
We're proud to be only one of a small number of football clubs in the UK who has Investors in People.
Why HRM at Derby?
I already had some work experience in HR, but wanted to understand the theory to underpin it.
Plus I wanted to have the degree to progress and develop my career. I worked part time in retail whilst I studied and had the opportunity to do some HR related work and HR volunteer placements to complement my studies.
Staying at home gave me a greater work life balance with the flexibility to fit studies around paid work and a social life. It also meant that I was able to utilise local contacts which was a good fit for me.
A course that suited me
The course was good. It had the right balance and was appropriately backed up by tutorial theory and study styles that suited me.
The on-site resources were good and lecturers were accessible on email for guidance. In particular I remember Ian Winfield who really managed to bring the theory to life by drawing on his experiences of Japanese business methodology.
The degree was a great springboard for my career and I have since built on these studies since graduating. I felt it gave me an edge when competing in the job market.
I have successfully gained my PG Diploma CIPD since graduating. Now I will look to develop collective leadership training, collaborative learning and look forward to more challenges.
