Amy Edwards

Amy is the joint winner of the Bates Weston award for the Best BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance Student in 2009.

Winning the award

It feels great to have won this award after all the hard work I put in to achieve a first class honours in this demanding subject.

Why Derby?

I chose Derby because it has gold accreditation from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), which enabled me to receive nine exemptions from the fourteen professional accountancy qualifications. It's a great place to study as it has so many facilities for students along with very enthusiastic lecturers who are willing to help and support you every step of the way.

Preparing for my future career

This degree has provided me with an excellent understanding of practical accounting principles that has been very helpful, as I made the transition from studying to actually working in practice. I gained thorough knowledge and understanding across a broad range of financial modules which meant I had many career options when I graduated.

I'm currently working for an accountancy practice in Leamington Spa where I am exposed to all aspects of accountancy. I'm gaining valuable experience and so far every day has been different. My employer is sponsoring me through my ACCA professional accountancy examinations so I'm also studying part time, and I really couldn't be happier with my job.

My future plans are to qualify as an accountant in the next couple of years and eventually work my way up to partner level in practice, once I've decided what aspect of accountancy I would like to specialise in.

My advice

I would advise people thinking of studying the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance course at Derby to be prepared to put in some hard work but don't forget that it's worth every effort once you have graduated. Good luck!

"Bates Weston congratulates Amy on her achievements this year and we are pleased to continue to support the University and the business faculty by sponsoring this award.

Over the past year, the difficult economic climate has meant that businesses have needed clear and practical advice from their professional advisors, particularly from their accountants, on how to weather a recession. Students graduating in this discipline can be assured that their skills have never been more pertinent."
