Alison McCabe, BA (Hons) Business Management

Choosing Derby Business School

I chose to study Business Management at Derby as I found that I had a real passion for business and I was eager to learn about all aspects of various organisations rather than the one core industry.

I decided that a degree was right for me as I wanted to challenge myself. I have always been very career orientated and having a degree in Business gives you so many more opportunities.

A rewarding course

I found the course very interesting and informative. The aspects that I really enjoyed in particular were using case studies for various modules. I found this really got me thinking and engaging with current organisations, I began to see the business logic behind various media campaigns and this resulted in my passion for consumer behaviour and advertisement.

A supportive network

The lecturers at the university were always very helpful and very approachable. The course material was easily accessible through the university website and therefore anything that you felt you may not have understood in the lecture you could look over again.

In my final year we were all was assigned a personal tutor to support us with anything that may have been a concern. Having this support network in place was vital for me and I managed to attain a 2.1 degree classification because of this.

I loved the facilities at Kedleston Road, the library in particular was fantastic. There are plenty of places to grab a coffee or unwind in the student union bar.

How my degree led to my career

I decided to go straight into full time work, I really enjoyed studying however I felt that I was ready to go to full time work and put what I learnt into practice.

I currently work for McConnells Group, an advertising agency based in Derby, as a Media Executive.

As my degree was in Business Management I also chose modules that particularly focused on advertising and marketing, therefore I feel this really helped as it offered academic understanding of the marketing industry. I have applied many aspects of my studies into my career from the ability of meeting deadlines to organisational skills.

From my degree I had an understanding of the industry so this prepared me for my role, my degree also helped with business terminology and various marketing tools that I use daily.

My advice

I would recommend a degree at the University of Derby. It has a fantastic support system, the facilities are modern and a great attribute and there’s lots of societies and sports activities if that’s your thing.

My advice for future students would be that you get back what you put in. If you put the maximum effort into your studies and with the support system in place at University Of Derby then you should succeed.
