“One of the best parts of studying at Derby has been the opportunity to meet such a diverse range of excellent people. Sharing experiences has been an enlightening experience and has broadened my appreciation of how important the application is to the theory”
– Jodie Varney

Jodie won The Barton Consulting Award for Best Postgraduate Enterprise Student for 2009. She studied the MBA.

Winning the award

Hearing that I had won the award came as a great surprise to me and a real privilege.

Studying at Derby

I also studied BA (Hons) Business Studies at Derby and as part of this, I went on a work placement to a small consultancy firm who provided me with invaluable experiences of a whole raft of business areas, both within their own and other organisations. The contacts I made during this time enabled me to set-up my own company during my final year at University, providing sub-contracted business support to Derbyshire firms. I achieved a First Class Honours in 2006.

Highlights

One of the best parts of studying at Derby has been the opportunity to meet such a diverse range of excellent people. Sharing experiences has been an enlightening experience and has broadened my appreciation of how important the application is to the theory. The facilities at Derby are also excellent, with wide access to online services within the Learning Centre and a high quality of teaching.

Enhancing my career prospects

The breadth of topics covered in the MBA programme has been so beneficial to me. Certainly within my profession, the MBA is a widely recognised title that opens up new avenues into more senior roles, certainly within larger corporations where my direct experience to date is limited. At the present time, I continue to work with the same manager who recruited me some years ago during my placement, though I'm now employed within a manufacturing firm.

Although a small company, our business is doing extremely well and there are plenty of opportunities for my role here to develop and expand further without me having to look elsewhere.

I'm also a Director and shareholder of a consultancy firm in order to maintain my activities in this area, as well as being employed by a chemistry R&D company as a Funding Specialist.
