“The skills I've learned have helped me in my current role. I'm now able to research new business opportunities, devise strategic plans and understand the importance of my role in connection with the company performance and team performance”
– Joanne Midgley

Joanne is studying her MBA part time whilst working for Akoma International (UK) Ltd.

Why I chose the MBA

I felt the MBA would help me to develop a more holistic understanding of business and at the same time update and enhance my skills such as report writing, conducting research, team working and analytical and problem solving. This will all provide a sound base to develop my career.

I've enjoyed learning the different subject areas such as strategic management, marketing and operations, equality and diversity, corporate and social responsibility and strategic finance. They are all very interesting and relevant to my career aspirations, past experience and learning new subject areas.

The residential

As part of the MBA I attended the residential. This was great as I had the opportunity to work with other students and relate class room studies to real life situations.

Returning to study

The lecturers at Derby are extremely supportive and understanding. They provide advice and guidance not only with assignments and exams but also study techniques and organisational skills. I made use of having a study mentor, that I found very beneficial.

The most challenging thing about returning back to studying is having the ability to be disciplined. I've enjoyed meeting students from all walks of life, including international students. I found this valuable as you learn about other students' cultures, industry backgrounds and forge new friendships.

Putting learning into practice

I currently work for Akoma International (UK) Limited based in Derby. They import and export natural skincare ingredients, and sell their products via their website.

I got my job before I started my degree. The MBA has helped me to put some of the skills I've learnt into practice and I now have a more rounded understanding about business, especially understanding how each department relates to the other and how everyone's job is equally as important to the other.

A rewarding and challenging course

The skills I've learned have helped me in my current role. Iim now able to research new business opportunities, devise strategic plans and understand the importance of my role in connection with the company performance and team performance.
