A career in human resources

I realised after my first MA in French that I really wanted to start a career in Human Resources but that it would be extremely difficult to find something without the adequate degree and especially one that would be accredited by the CIPD. As a consequence, I decided to apply to Derby University, which was offering a masters in HRM that covered the main areas of the sector.

Exploring the subject

I have studied the different specialties of HR and also the more general management specialities in order to gain a broader knowledge of management. I completed a 15,000-word dissertation on the effectiveness of HR strategies in academic staff recruitment and retention. What I have enjoyed the most is definitely the independent study because it gave me the freedom to explore a subject that I really wanted to discover and approach it in a more practical way through interviews. However, I would have never been able to carry it out without the knowledge I gained through my other modules.

Preparing me for the workplace

I would definitely recommend the Masters in HRM at the University of Derby as it thoroughly prepares you to face the real working world. I started with no background in HR and came out with a deep academic and practical knowledge that I am now using in my job everyday. The Masters really puts you in situations where you have to challenge yourself and explore your own limits.

A great challenge in a supportive environment

Teamwork, presentations and regular assignments totally challenge what you think you know about the subject, what you know about others and about yourself. It is a real life experience condensed in one year. The lecturers have been really supportive and open and always provide thorough feedbacks which helped me progress in my studies.

Winning the award

I am extremely honoured and proud to have been selected among all the Business students of this year to win this award. This is definitely one of the greatest ways to end an academic year.

Where I am today

I am now a Trainee Recruitment Consultant for one of the biggest recruitment agencies in Paris and I intend to explore to the maximum the sector of recruitment. In the future, I may want to join the HR department of a company so as to apply my knowledge in a totally different environment and to carry out different responsibilities.

The knowledge and experience I gained at Derby University definitely gave me more confidence and expertise in my daily responsibilities. I am more than happy to have found my career path and to enjoy what I am doing is one of the biggest rewards of my life!
