“Lots of theories covered by the modules of the programme were new to me and I enjoyed all of them. I applied a lot of this newly gathered knowledge on a project with the English Organic Food Plc. We developed a marketing strategy, and looked at new operational and logistical concepts for this young fast-food company”
– Christian Mittelhammer
Christian studied the MBA.
I worked in various organisations, including the German Air Force, before coming to the University of Derby as a mature student. Prior to my MBA I was a project engineer at August Lapple (PTY) Ltd in South Africa. I decided to pursue an MBA because I aspired to a new and bigger challenge. I wanted to apply my work and life experience to academic theories, and find new approaches and solutions.
A really good fit
I really like the Midlands and so looked for a University in this area. Derby Business School sounded very reasonable. Derby appeared to be the right size to focus on your studies and not get distracted from other things. The mentoring and support I received on my course was really focused on the individual, and adapted to the capabilities of the different students. The support EU and international students receive at the University from the International Office is outstanding.
Lots of theories covered by the modules of the programmme were new to me and I enjoyed all of them. I applied a lot of this newly gathered knowledge on a project with the English Organic Food Plc. We developed a marketing strategy, and looked at new operational and logistical concepts for this young fast-food company.
I enjoyed all the modules where I was able to use my experience from former careers, like quality or project management. All the strategic based modules sparked my interest and have totally changed my way of thinking. The MBA has supplied me with many academic theories and knowledge and also additional skills that I didn't expect, such as the ability to question and scrutinise things. I now have a much bigger appreciation of different cultures which is fundamental in our globalising world.
My new employer, Durr Systems, is one of the world's leading system suppliers of paint shops and final assembly lines in the automotive and aviation industries. It is located in Stuttgart, Germany. I am employed as a Junior Project Manager with the prospect of leading projects on an international basis. I combine my engineering experience with the managerial knowledge which I gathered on my MBA.
My first project was in a team concentrating on the construction of the assembly line for the new Porsche Panamera. I then moved to the aviation department where I've been involved in the planning of the new Airbus production line in China. I'm also looking forward to an up-and-coming project at Rolls Royce in Derby.
An MBA is definitely worth the cost. Not just for your professional career but for your personal development. Although some stages of the study were very hard and challenging.
I had my best time in Derby and truly enjoyed it.
