Higher Apprenticeships and Degree Apprenticeships

'An Apprenticeship is a job, in a skilled occupation, that requires substantial and sustained training, leading to the achievement of an Apprenticeship standard and the development of transferable skills to progress careers'

Source: BIS/DfE

Higher Apprenticeships transform the way in which businesses acquire and develop the higher level skills they need their workforce to have in a dynamic and constantly evolving national and global market. They include a blend of technical knowledge, on the job experience and business skills that empower and motivate employers to maximise their potential and providing real business impact. Recent government announcements have confirmed funding for higher education that sits within an approved higher apprenticeship programme - there has never been a better time to get involved.

Why work with the University of Derby?

The University of Derby is leading the way in the development of Higher and Degree Apprenticeships locally and nationally. The University has grown its Apprenticeship provision by 75% in 2015 and is planning to continue growing this agenda. We are committed to Apprenticeships at all levels, from intermediate and advanced Apprenticeships delivered through Buxton and Leek College, to Higher Apprenticeships and Degree Apprenticeships (HADA).

The University is keen to work with employers across all sectors to develop new Higher Apprenticeships and Degree Apprenticeships (HADA). For instance, in addition to our current portfolio of Higher Apprenticeships in Mineral Product Technology, Construction and Engineering and Health and Social Care, we are currently developing  'purpose fit' HADAs in Law, Hospitality, Talent Development and Business Management and Education and Training.

We are keen to work with employers who want to work with a University that acheives 96.9% of its graduates being employed or in further study 6 months after completing their degree (HESA 2015). We are looking to work with employers who want to have a real input into their sector skills provision. For Instance, we are currently working with leading employers such as Tarmac and Hanson amd Aggregate Industries.

What do industry professionals say about our Apprenticeships?

Working with the University of Derby to develop the Higher Apprenticeship programme for the industry has been an extremely beneficial exercise to both the industry and the University. We now have an entry level qualification and training package that we can use to attract young future managers into the business to earn whilst they learn. In the four years since launch we have attracted and developed some fantastic individuals and those who joined us on the first cohort are now placed in management or supervisory positions and are enjoying the success of their involvement in the programme. From a company perspective Hanson has enjoyed the benefit of attracting good quality apprentices into the industry who will become our managers and leaders of the future. - Karen Wright - Hanson

What support is available?

We can offer advice and guidance on the changes to apprenticeship delivery, such as accessing funding, the apprenticeship levy, apprenticeship incentives, and the further development of new trailblazer standards.

Our Portfolio of Higher Apprenticeships

The University of Derby has developed Higher Apprenticeships in the following areas; others are in development:

Nursing - new for 2017

The University is preparing to offer an apprenticeship route into nursing from September 2017, although the apprenticeship still needs to be agreed by the government and the Nursing and Midwifery Council. We anticipate that this will happen soon but cannot guarantee it.

Apprenticeships are supported by employers and so for any student looking to enter nursing via this route, at present it will be necessary to look for an employer who is planning to offer this opportunity. We would recommend setting an alert up on NHS jobs, or looking locally for smaller employers advertising for this.

However, if you are an employer who is looking to fill a nursing vacancy with a Nursing apprentice, then please contact Jane Lowe, Apprenticeship Manager on 01332 593673, who can support your recruitment requirements.

The apprenticeship requires entrants to meet all the normal entry requirements for the BSc (Hons) Nursing degree. Details of these are on the university website. We will also post any updates to this information on our website when appropriate.
