University sports teams will see the benefit of the £700,000 project
It’s long been our ambition to improve the sports facilities for students and staff.

Work has begun on a £700,000 project to improve facilities for our sports teams.
The University is replacing one of the main pitches at its Kedleston Road site with an all-weather version to improve facilities, predominately for its football, hockey and rugby (training) teams.
A three month project will see the removal of a little used running track, the digging out of existing turf from the 7,420 square metre area, covering of the area with a protective under layer and the laying of the synthetic all-weather pitch.
The work, being done by contractor G Thornton (Contracts) Ltd of Lancashire, is scheduled to be completed by the end of November (2008).
It will complement other works being done to improve the current sports pitches on the University’s Sturgess Fields open space, just over the A38 from the Kedleston Road site.
Ian Willgoose, Director of Estates, said: “It’s long been our ambition to improve the sports facilities for students and staff based at the Kedleston Road site, and the wider University Quarter in Derby.
“This all-weather pitch will be a top notch facility, enabling our sports teams to train all year round."
The £700,000 funding has come from University funds.
