The new look Britannia Mill

The University's Britannia Mill site has been transformed by its ongoing £6m refurbishment.

Britannia Mill

Note

Neither the 'footprint' of the Britannia Mill site - the total area it currently takes up - nor the height of the building will be increased by the refurbishment project.

The Britannia Mill site, in Mackworth Road, Derby, is now entering the third phase of its £6m refurbishment.

The redbrick, former industrial building currently houses:

  • Occupational Therapy;
  • Therapeutic Arts and Complementary Medicines;
  • Applied Social and Community Studies.

Since work began, more than two years ago, the £6m project has been carried out in phases to reduce the impact of the works on staff and students.

The scheme is currently programmed to be completed by Autumn 2011.

Work Completed

So far the refurbishment has seen the replacement of the building's roof, lights and windows; the cleaning and rendering of the external brickwork, and the installation of a new heating system.

As well as improving the look of the main building replacing the windows with much more thermally efficient glazing and insulation, and the old boiler system with a modern one, has improved Britannia Mill's environmental performance.

The top floor of the main building, external boundary walls and existing refectory area have also seen significant improvements.

The car park, and work 'sheds' in it, have been reorganised.

Phase Three

Phase Three of the works, now underway, will see the construction of a glazed extension to the Britannia Mill building's centre, out into the existing rear car park. This will form a new front entrance, to enhance the renovated industrial building, which will include a central staircase and DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliant lift.

Ian Willgoose, University of Derby Director of Estates, said: "I would be grateful if staff and students at Britannia Mill could bear with any disturbances during these changes.

"We will do our utmost to keep these to a minimum and the end result will be that they will benefit from having a much more useful and attractive building to work in."

The Britannia Mill scheme is part of the ongoing University Estates programme.

This includes the now completed Kedleston Road towers refenestration project and new Enterprise Centre, and improved sports facilities (details of which are all on this website).
