The University's sports facility at Harpur Hill, in Buxton, is undergoing a £1.5m refurbishment.

The facility, used by Buxton Campus students, closed in June 2010 to allow work to go ahead. It is due to re-open in January, for the beginning of the 2010/11 spring term.

Contractor Vinci Construction Plc is behind the project, their previous work for the University of Derby includes the Markeaton Street site and the Enterprise Centre, in Derby.

The refurbishment of Harpur Hill will provide 1,300 square metres of space, including:

  • a new look sports hall
  • improved changing rooms
  • state of the art outside climbing wall
  • new roof and external rendering for the facility
  • three new classrooms.

Ian Willgoose, University Director of Estates, said: "The Harpur Hill refurbishment is another important stage in the University's improvement of its sports facilities; following previous projects such as the all-weather pitch and tennis courts at its Kedleston Road site.

"Buxton students will find it has been well worth the wait, when the facility re-opens in January 2011."

Enquiries about the Harpur Hill project should be directed to the Estates department on ext 1100, or 01332 591111, or email Ian Willgoose i.willgoose@derby.ac.uk.
