Why study this at Derby?
You can undertake a negotiated programme of research leading to an award of either a Masters of Philosophy degree or a Doctor of Philosophy degree. These higher degrees are awarded in recognition of a successful period of research training, normally culminating in the production of a thesis.
There are three routes to a higher degree:
MPhil
This is designed for graduates who want to gain a strong knowledge and understanding of the subject and then take the discipline forward through an approved programme of original research.
New route PhD
The new route is for recently qualified graduates with good honours degrees who are keen to progress immediately to a research experience. This will prepare you for a career in which the ability to undertake research will play a key role.
Traditional route PhD
This route entails a programme of research which normally takes three years of full time study. You can choose to take it part time over a period of up to six years. The traditional route enables capable and qualified individuals with a masters degree to pursue on original research investigation into a chosen topic within a field of enquiry.
Committed to research
We are committed to research, scholarship and critical thinking to inform the academic study, vocational training and professional development of our students.
We have a lively and growing postgraduate community undertaking MPhil and PhD research degrees, all seeking to stretch their abilities and make new contributions to knowledge.
MPhil and PhD supervision for full or part time study is offered in a range of disciplinary areas, including interdisciplinary work drawing upon the expertise within Business and Management, Computing, Mathematics, Technology and Law. You can also complete an MPhil or PhD by distance learning.
Who will supervise me?
We design an individual research programme to suit your topic and you will regularly meet your supervisor for guidance and progress monitoring. Our 50 research active members of staff ensure doctoral programmes are offered across a wide range of research interests, methodologies and techniques.
What are my future prospects?
MPhil and PhD holders are increasingly sought for their high level skills that transfer in to a wide range of sectors. The broad based research method training provided meets employers' demands for applicants with high personal skills, qualities and work experience, in addition to academic achievement.
What will I be studying?
The School's support for research degree students is focused primarily through three research groups:
- Systems Thinking and Organisational Change
- Distributive Systems in Computing
- Law in Society
Other areas of research expertise are covered by individual staff members' research interests. The nature of research activity is practice-based and applied. Many areas of research involve working closely with industry in the UK, Eastern Europe and the Far East. Our staff are happy to discuss the possible applications of our research with interested companies and other organisations.
