I would recommend you to study a degree at Derby because you don't just get a degree, but a priceless experience.

Chola Kangwa is from Zambia and is studying a joint honours degree in Business Management and Enterprise Management. Chola is currently in her third year.

Choosing my course

I decided to do a degree because where I'm from it is important to have papers and evidence of knowledge in whichever industry you plan to work in. I chose a Joint Honours Business Management and Enterprise Management degree because I would like to eventually own my own business after my studies.

Arriving at Derby

When I first arrived at Derby I was very nervous, but on arrival I was given lots of information to guide me on different aspects of living and studying in Derby. I chose to stay in halls of residence, at Peak Court, where I was given free bus passes that helped me get around and explore Derby. My flatmates were very friendly and there was 24 hour help provided whenever I needed it.

Making new friends

The first few weeks were hard but I soon made friends and began to enjoy university life. I am part of the African Caribbean society where we go on various trips in and around Derby. My favourite trip was to watch the Martin Luther King play at Derby Theatre as he is someone I am truly inspired by.

Studying at Derby

The lectures are interesting and involve a lot of practical work and assignments based on real business situations. I find this very useful as it has enabled me to understand more what we are taught in class, making the whole learning experience enjoyable. The lecturers are patient and have given me continuous support both through email and in person. I am now able to write and present reports in a professional manner, give a presentation confidently in front of a number of people and work effectively with others as a team.

Opportunities within the University

There are a number of volunteering opportunities and things to do to help improve your employability. I am currently doing the Derby Award which is about improving my leadership and management skills which are very important qualities to have when working.

Why I would recommend Derby

Derby is a peaceful, diverse and multicultural city. It's full of friendly people and a great place to study. It is close to cities such as Leicester, Nottingham and Birmingham for those looking for a change of scenery. I would recommend you to study a degree at Derby because you don't just get a degree, but a priceless experience.
