About this module
This module is designed to enable the Health Care Practitioner to meet the current challenges of modern asthma care and management. It offers a logical and systematic journey from the understanding of associated anatomy, pathophysiology and mechanisms of asthma through to present and contemporary perspectives of management.
Clinicians management of asthma can only be applied when the patient is present. This is usually a few hours per year at most in contact with the health care professional. Patients then need to self-manage for over 8000 hours per year on their own. The modern practitioner needs to know how to facilitate that process with the individual and family members.
They cannot do this without knowing the patients' motivation, self-efficacy, knowledge of illness, perceptions of severity and vulnerability etc. Without this kind of knowledge the practitioner would potentially face countless re-admissions using crisis management as the main strategy.
An international focus will be adopted in reviewing current policy relating to patient management and self management practices in addition to close scrutiny of national and local policies impacting on the students current arena of practice.
