  • You'll develop both group facilitation and intervention skills.

About the course

If you're an art therapies practitioner or a student working within the areas of mental health, social inclusion, the use of creativity and the arts, recovering and wellbeing, this course is for you.

Developmental Transformations offers a creative, playful and expressive opportunity to experience 'pretend' stress, and extend our tolerance through human development and improvisational techniques. It enhances our emotional and cognitive flexibility, responsiveness, role-repertoire and our ability to develop and sustain intimacy.

The workshop will introduce a developmental model of wellbeing and how to promote this using group facilitation skills. This training will support your understanding of the uses of creativity and spontaneity in wellbeing work. Throughout the workshop we'll consider the importance of compassion and empathy to retain the experience of connectedness with individuals experiencing stress or distress.

You'll be taught by Dr David Read Johnson who will be the key note presenter of the day. He has pioneered Developmental Transformations in a drama therapy context in the USA and around the world. Practitioners currently using this technique will also attend, and will share their experiences of using this method with a range of vulnerable populations. This will enable you to share thoughts, best practice and promote further discussion.

What you'll cover

The day will begin with an introduction to the evolution of developmental transformations and the governing principles, such as client safety, trauma, development and play.

You'll learn about how the participation of developmental transformations in a group helps to aid social inclusion and wellbeing. You'll consider the justifications of offering this method to employers and service commissioners to facilitate wider implementation of developmental transformations in therapeutic practice. You'll also be encouraged to think about different client groups, their needs and whether developmental transformations can have a beneficial therapeutic role to play.

The course is taught through both presentations and experiential opportunities including group work and discussion. Throughout the course Dr Read Johnson will draw upon theory, allow time for personal reflection and discussion.
