Charly Smith, a BA (Hons) Textile Design graduate, won the Selvedge Award for Best Knitwear Design in Show at the New Designers exhibition 2009.

To put Charly's achievement in perspective, New Designers 2009 showcased the work of over 3,000 graduate students and represented 193 design courses across the UK. Over 18,000 attendees saw the work of our Textile Design students at this event.

Bespoke knitwear with a vintage touch

Charly's work was based on an exhibition that she visited at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) called 'Certain Trees'. From this she developed a range of paper work and textile drawing exploring the theme of stylised tree illustration. She then looked at fashion knitwear companies such as Boden and John Smedley, for fabric direction and concentrated on producing fully fashioned, bespoke knitwear with a contemporary yet vintage feel.
