Commended work by Jack Green

A BA (Hons) Illustration student, Jack Green has been highly commended in the Penguin Design Award. It's a high profile and highly competitive competition, so this is a fantastic achievement for one of our students.

Explanation of his work

"Within this design I have tried to reflect the theme of the book. The book is written in a stream of consciousness that is based on the spontaneous road trips of Kerouac and his friends across mid-century America. I have tried to incorporate this in the book cover using quick line drawings; this makes the cover appear like an explosion of images of places he visited, people he met, and so on. I like the way parts of the design are initially unrecognizable as scenes from the book until studied closely; then you become aware of hidden shapes and images and although they don't tell the story, they show that the book is full of intrigue and interest and invite you to look further at the cover to discover more of what the book may hold." - Jack Green

Judges' comments

'Shows an appreciation of the minuscule - as you become acquainted with it you would grow to love it. I love the doodles: it's the sort of thing that might actually have been done on the road' - Harland Miller

'I liked the period feel - it reminded me slightly of the Beetles' Revolver album' - Nick Hornby
