Jonathan Brodie shares his experiences on submitting some of his work for a national competition

As part of the final year of BA (Hon) Graphic Design students are encouraged to respond to briefs set by D&AD and to submit them for competition. The chance to work on high profile briefs which receive the attention of some of the best designers in the industry is a fantastic opportunity.

Hear what Jonathan has to say about the competition

"I selected the Faber & Faber brief for which the publishers required a typographic template for a series of print on demand book covers relating to a collection of books on the film industry. My response reflected the nature of what makes the experience of film unique, communication through moving image. This sentiment was conveyed by utilising the typographic template to organise the information into the format of a film's title sequence. When combined with and removed from a surrounding sleeve, the credits literally 'scroll', creating a motion graphics effect.

This idea was the central focus of the outcomes, but was supported further by a book classification system to create an overall 'feel' reminiscent of the VHS/DVD experience to appeal to the target audience who would be predominantly collectors.

To be included In-Book in this year's Student Annual, whilst a surprise, has been a re-affirming experience of my time at the University. The culmination of four years work in which D&AD has proven a guiding influence means I am now ready to approach the industry with new found confidence and a much stronger portfolio than when I arrived."
