Giles Edsall studied Fine Art at Derby, and has had great success exhibiting his work. Now based in Leeds he won the Artsmix 2009 Emerging Artist Award in the 3D category, and was recently chosen for the Peoples Choice Awards at Leeds Art Gallery Open Exhibition. He constructs sculptures from hundreds and sometimes thousands of miniature origami models, stringing them together using nylon thread and suspending them inside perspex boxes for the final jaw-dropping effect.

His obsession with origami, the art of Japanese paper folding, started about five years ago when asked to create an origami rabbit by his mother for her playgroup. Giles said, 'My first efforts were a complete failure but I persisted, now I fold models everyday'.

In the past he's created tiny boats and hung them to resemble a wave and also camels on a desert scene. He has made Autumn coloured leaves and hung them in a scattered fashion to give it a windswept look. Another piece of work involved thousands of tiny butterflies. Giles creates a lot of his work using small origami birds and one piece is made using 1,000 cranes, each less than 1cm in wingspan. The work can take anywhere from 100 to 300 hours to create.

His latest work, for which he won the Peoples Choice Award, was made using 15,000 tiny origami flies, hung to create a disintegrating self portrait titled simply 'Self'. Giles said, 'People always say I must be incredibly patient, I'm not really but the end result is usually worth all the work'.

He has recently accepted his first major commission and is currently working on new pieces for his first solo show.
