Jaacq Hugo & Polis Loizou

Off-broadway

It has been a rich experience at Derby that will never leave me.

The emphasis on there being a mixture of practical and theory based learning at Derby has been great and it has given us so much grounding in relation to the practical side alongside exposure to world cinema and diverse people. It really is a great learning experience.

Marriage of Fire and Water

Jaacq Hugo and Polis Loizou graduated with a BA (Hons) in Film and Video Production. They worked together on Jaacq's degree show production piece Marriage of Fire and Water and found they had a natural working bond.

This has led to them setting up their own business The Off-Off-Off-Broadway Company. Their main focus and passion is on combining film and theatre performance. Polis is the writer and director and Jaacq is the actor for the performances.

They've performed at the Buxton Fringe Festival with their black comedy, Clothes To Fall Apart In. They're currently working on their next piece The Sexes which is premiering at the Brighton Festival in May and co-stars their fellow Film and Video graduate Laura Baker.

Vintage inspiration

A huge inspiration for this show came from a vintage doll and clothes collection owned by Polis's late grandmother.

Their work is all about storytelling combined with film and theatre.

"We enjoy entertaining and giving the audience a dramatic performance." Jaacq

"We aren't about socio-political agendas, we focus on the stories of our individual outcasts." Polis

Dark roots behind the comic face of the shows

"We're drawn to creating different characters and we want people to form an understanding of the outcast on either a humourous or serious level; we leave it to the audience to decide.

"The lectures at Derby are great theory and practical teachers. Lecturer, Tom Craig is a constant driver and excellent inspiration and I have been able to develop my own style and ideas.

"And there are a range of varied people at Derby with different interests and ideas which have inspired strong group relationships and great ideas to be born." Polis

"Every one of the lecturers brought something different and Tom Craig was very supportive.

The great thing about Derby was the freedom and space to experiment, play with ideas and find out who you are and what you specifically want to do. Also you get to work with very interesting people who have lots to offer in terms of ideas, inspiration and direction." Jaacq

It all feels so natural and we feel at home within the industry

"We never planned any of this, it all feels so natural and we feel at home within this industry. We're excited about our next production projects and we're open minded about the future. We're planning very ambitious things. We want to create great things." Polis
