Fair Trade Fashion Show

'Green is the new Black'

The Fairtrade event, which was organised by the Fashion Society was designed to show that clothing could be ethically responsible and environmentally conscious, yet still remain contemporary and up to date with the changing world of fashion. The first part of the show gave the Fashion Society a chance to showcase their work which included a gown constructed from recycled wedding dresses, charity shop clothes that had been deconstructed then reconstructed to form new garments made of costume jewellery, accessories, knit and plastic bags. The second part of the show showcased Fairtrade and High Street companies including Debenhams and New Look, promoting organic cotton and fairtrade clothing.

The money raised went towards the final year fashion show and charities including RAGE and Cancer Research, who donated some of the charity shop clothes.

Here's some of the facts, remember think before you bin:

  • Consumption of garments in the UK has increased by over  1/3 between 2001 and 2005.
  • The market for organic textiles in the UK is growing at 50% a year.
  • Garment workers typically receive 0.5% of the retail price of the garment.
  • Garment cutting waste accounts for 10-20% of fabric consumption within the UK.
  • Polyester is not biodegradable, left in landfill it will be with us for around 200 years.
