Graduates form photographic agency
20 October 2009
Jackie Rock, Chris Howard and Angela Jenkins each graduated from Derby with a BA (Hons) in Commercial Photography. Following graduation they have successfully formed Cactus Images, their own photographic agency business.
They set up their studio at Banks Mill which is a business unit provided by the University of Derby. The unit provides support and training for new businesses in the creative industries sector. Cactus Images transformed their space into a modern digital photography studio.
They assessed the current climate for businesses and responded by broadening their distribution channels to boost sales.
Angel Jenkins said, "With more and more businesses developing online sales facilities and using auction sites to sell further afield we saw our opportunity."
With the pictures being on sale online, it was crucial that the images were of clear quality. Jackie said, "With online sales, showing clear, attractive pictures of your products converts visitors into customers. When customers shop online they are only able to use one of their senses, sight. You have to show them that your bread is the freshest around, your jewellery dazzles from all angles. Your picture needs to tell a story, to draw the consumer to buy."
Derby has commissioned a lot of work to Cactus including Virgin Active, Lastolite and Natalie Harris jewellery. Cactus are gaining a broader client base and have secured work with regional and national clients.
