Students loved working independently - being set a brief and then having to work out aspects for themselves.

The Summer School Workshops are a great way for students to get a taste of what it's like to study in a University environment, and sample courses that may be of interest, whilst learning new skills to enhance their current studies.'

I have spoken to the students who took part last summer and they have said:

  • They really enjoyed the experience and would definitely like to take part again.
  • They loved working independently - being set a brief and then having to work out aspects for themselves.
  • Good to also take part in group work - and meet different people from other schools.
  • Good to be in a university environment.

From a teaching point of view - students gained more confidence and it has broadened their views on courses available.  Where possible we have tried to integrate their work into coursework eg Hayley was in the fashion group and has included a page on draping and modelling.

Many thanks

Summer School student 2010

It made me look at the wider possibilities; it's great to have had the opportunity to get a feel for where it could take me in the future.

The experience has developed the students' overall confidence and maturity, they now understand what a university can offer them, so much so that some of the students who were going to study other subjects have now decided to pursue a career in Art and Design because of the summer school.
