The Summer School workshops are a great way for students to get a taste of what it's like to study in a university environment, and sample courses that may be of interest, whilst learning new skills to enhance their current studies.

Our Summer School will take place on 3 - 5 July 2013 and is aimed at sixth form and further education students who wish to get a taster of what art and design courses will be like at university. You will find our frequently asked questions below, but if you have any others, don't hesitate to contact us.

Who is the summer school for?

  • If you're in secondary school or further education and interested in enrolling on a creative course at university this summer school is for you. To apply you will need to be starting the final year of your A levels or BTEC in September 2013.

What will I be doing?

How do I book a place?

  • Speak to your teacher as they must book places on behalf of students.
  • They must fill in a booking form for students to attend.

Can I get my classmates involved?

  • We actively support other students attending, but places are limited. Only three students per school per subject area can register.

Is it a residential and will I have to stay over?

  • No. You will attend the summer school on a day by day basis. All participants must attend all 3 days of the summer school.

What materials do I need to bring?

  • We supply the materials that you need. You may wish to bring your camera though, to record your progress and your ideas.  If you are planning to participate in the life drawing class, you may wish to bring the materials that you like to use for example, charcoal, paint, pastels or liners.

Can I keep the work I produce?

  • Yes you'll be able to keep the work that you have created to include in your portfolio. If you're participating in the Fashion activities, you will not be able to take the final garment home with you but we will give you a CD containing photos of the garment for your portfolio.

Will I get an opportunity to exhibit my work?

  • Yes. An exhibition of your work will run on Friday 5 July, 2pm - 8pm at Markeaton Street. Your friends and family are all very welcome to come along to see what you've achieved at Derby and have a tour of Markeaton Street.

How much does it cost?

  • The summer school is free so all you have to do is book and turn up.

How do I get to Markeaton Street?

  • Our Markeaton Street site is close to Derby city centre. Please see our map for further directions.
  • The site is easily accessible by foot, bike or bus. Please see the Unibus timetable to help you plan your journey.

  • Information about each of our art and design courses can be found on our web pages.

How do I book?

  • Please complete the booking form if you are interested. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
