My Name is Tom - Daniel Austin

Broken Narratives - Sorren Jones | Folk - Jemima Williams

Daniel Austin's work, 'My name is Tom' came runner up in the student category at the Flip animation festival.

A clever use of metaphor

His project focuses on the experiences of his brother Tom, who suffers from cystic fibrosis. The animation illustrates Tom's daily battle with the disease through a bold, atmospheric visual identity and a clever use of metaphor and symbolism.

The project was something Daniel felt very passionately about and showed that despite cystic fibrosis, Tom was able to be an excellent athlete throughout his youth before finally being forced to quit in 2002. His numerous achievements were recognised by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and he was shortlisted for the Cystic Fibrosis Achievers Award in Sport in 1996 before winning the same award in 1997. He was also nominated again in 2000.

All things animation

Flip is an eclectic mix of all things animation. Based in the heart of the Midlands the festival provides a wide range of activities from educational workshops for young people to experimental animation for grown ups. There's also: industry led panels, feature film screenings, international showcases, retrospectives of short films and spotlights on animation studios.
