School of Art and Design
We've a varied and stimulating range of courses within the School of Art and Design and all of our courses focus on exploring your personal creativity. We'll encourage you to be original and develop your individuality and personal voice, in order to prepare you for an exciting career in the creative industries.
You'll be taught by experienced tutors and visiting lecturers who are practising artists and designers. They all have a passion for the subject and real experience in the industry.
Facilities
All of our courses are based at Markeaton Street, so you'll be working in a modern, well-equipped and exciting environment. The facilities include:
- Open Studios
- Extensive workshops for both chemical and digital photography
- Facilities for our moving image makers to use both film and digital processes
- Fashion and Textile design studios
- Extensive Mac labs
- Craft workshops for wood, metal, ceramics, plaster and jewellery.
Preparing you for work
Our students go on to a wide range of careers in the arts based areas, as photographers, film makers and fine artists. In the design field, students have gone on to work in areas such as graphic design, textile design, children's book illustration, fashion design, publishing, animation and other areas in the creative design and communication industries.
We also actively encourage and support emerging businesses through Banks Mill Studios. As well as offering workspace, we provide business support activity including one-to-one advice, workshops, seminars and bi-annual Open Studios.
Working with employers
Our courses have an excellent track record of working with the creative industries on live projects, supported by companies such as The Bridge Design Group, fashion store Oasis, Anglia Television and Rolls-Royce PLC.
