Mair Perkins awarded first prize in international competition
Watch Mair's videos
Mair Perkins, who graduated from our BA (Hons) Animation course, was awarded first prize in the Animation section of the international competition, Design Against Fur.
She had to produce an animation clip lasting between 30-60 seconds that conveyed the concept that "the wearing of fur is cruel and unnecessary".
Watch her award winning video, "Design Against Fur".
The message behind the animation is that as consumers we have the ability to stop buying fur products that are not labelled correctly and that money is being made from exploiting animals. The cheapest animal products are from places where there are no welfare laws and the video highlights the cruel truth behind the product.
After graduating Mair worked as a graphic designer for the Students' Union and a freelancer.
Award winning DAF animation
Mair has recently completed an animation commission for an anti fur documentary called "skin trade" after the director saw her award winning DAF animation and contacted her.
Mair has also been submitting animations to film festivals and was a finalist in the Northern Design Competition. She also sells prints of her work at local art festivals.
Mair said, "The best thing about the course was that the tutors recognized that all the student's used different styles and methods and treated them like individuals. They did their best to help everyone reach their full potential and I am very grateful for their help, advice and feedback over the years. I would recommend the course to anyone interested in the subject".
Mair summarised her experience at Derby by saying, "The Animation course was brilliant and I wouldn't have the technical skills, knowledge or confidence if it wasn't for the course and the team of tutors".
