Samantha Dunn
Samantha Dunn studied the LLB (Hons) and is now a barrister at the Regency Chambers in Peterborough.
Why I chose Derby
I knew I wanted to become a barrister long before I came to university. When it came to choosing the right university for me I wanted to ensure that I would be gaining more than just the LL.B. I wanted a university which provided extra curricula activities and would make my C.V. stand out from the crowd so that I would have the best chance of succeeding in my pursuit of a career as a barrister.
Learning practical skills
I wasn't disappointed with my choice in Derby. The LL.B at Derby places great emphasis on developing practical legal skills such as drafting, negotiation and advocacy, all of which prepared me for my career as a barrister. In the third year I had the option to write a dissertation or undertake the Clinic module. I chose the Clinic module as it gave me the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience working one day a week at a local solicitors.
My achievements
While studying the LL.B, I took part in the Midland University Mooting Competition and I was awarded the "Best Advocate" prize in the Law Skills Triathlon competition in 2007. I also represented my peers on programme committee meetings and staff/student liaison committee meetings.
Stand out from the crowd
I graduated from Derby with a first class honours and a wealth of practical hands-on legal experience. I have no doubt that the skills and experience gained at Derby helped me to stand out when it came to applying for my pupillage.
What else could you possibly need?
I would recommend Derby to anyone considering studying law. The lecturers are friendly, supportive and approachable. The sports and social groups are a great way to meet new people. The city is small enough so you feel safe, but large enough so you won't get bored. Within a few miles of the city you have the gorgeous Derbyshire countryside to help you unwind after a long week of studying. What else could you possibly need from a university? I can't recommend Derby highly enough.
