Michelle Robinson

Michelle Robinson graduated from BA (Hons) Photography in 2012

Why did you choose to study BA (Hons) Photography at the University of Derby?

I came to an open day and was impressed with the facilities offered by the Art, Design and Technology Faculty, especially the photography department. I was particularly keen on both darkrooms as many universities don't offer the opportunity to use them. As well as this, the lecturers seemed to genuinely care about our needs; particularly making sure our creativity wasn’t stifled.

How do you feel to be part of FORMAT 13?

It’s a great honour to have my work selected to appear at such a well-known public exhibition alongside so many great photographers. I’m also looking forward to be exhibiting with my former classmates.

What support/opportunities did the University of Derby provide whilst you were studying here?

I received a lot of one-to-one support from my tutors which was invaluable. I took advantage of the opportunity to go to Paris on a photography field trip in the second year which gave me a great insight into the art world and how art is sold. I also used the large selection of art and photography reference books in the University libraries which were invaluable when I was writing my dissertation.

What are your future plans?

I’m taking a year out following which I’m looking to study for a Masters in Curatorial and Gallery Studies with a view to pursuing a career as a Curator.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

It’s a very good course which provides a good contextual knowledge as well as practical skills. The degree has helped me consider the conceptual element to a photograph rather than just seeing it as something beautiful to look at. Lecturers supply you with enough information about the art world as a whole so it feels slightly less daunting when you graduate and find yourself face-to-face with this reality.
