Gavin Wells
Gavin Wells graduated from BA (Hons) Photography in 2013
Why did you choose to study BA (Hons) Photography at the University of Derby?
Having worked for ten years as a graphic designer, I decided I wanted to broaden my horizons and study a course that really interested me. The BA (Hons) Photography degree at Derby seemed like a natural choice as I have a keen interest in both photography and fine art. Having researched the course content it became apparent that it would give me the opportunity to expand my technical knowledge whilst allowing me to creatively develop my photographic practice.
How do you feel to be part of FORMAT 13?
I have always enjoyed FORMAT and the wealth of talent that it attracts. It’s a fantastic honour and a privilege to be selected to exhibit my work Absolute Power at this world renowned, international event. In Absolute Power I have taken images of past and present politicians and added in the digital code information from headlines about political misdeeds to produce an electronically ‘corrupted’ image of my subjects.
What support/opportunities did the University of Derby provide whilst you were studying here?
The University provides fantastic resources such as the darkrooms, with superb technicians who provide continued support throughout your studies. The digital facilities are excellent and really helped me push and develop my own digital practice. The lecturers have a wealth of knowledge and experience, which as a student is invaluable to enable you to flourish as an artist.
What are your future plans?
As long as I enjoy the process of image making I will continue to do this.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
Due to the FORMAT festival, Derby is becoming increasingly known by the photographic community. Studying in the same city as the festival creates many possibilities and opportunities to become involved, network and participate in exhibitions. This is obviously a massive plus point for anyone thinking about applying to the BA (Hons) Photography degree.
