Chris Baker

Chris Baker graduated from BA (Hons) Photography in 2012

Why did you choose to study BA (Hons) Photography at the University of Derby?

I chose Derby at random initially, but once I visited the campus and saw the impressive dark rooms I didn’t bother applying to any other university!

How do you feel to be part of FORMAT 13?

I still find it difficult to believe that I was chosen to participate in one of the biggest international photography festivals. I volunteered for FORMAT 11 and got to work alongside some fantastic photographers and see some brilliant work. Knowing that I’ll be part of that again in a more prominent role is an amazing feeling.

What support/opportunities did the University of Derby provide whilst you were studying here?

The tutors were great and their support and knowledge were probably the biggest resource to draw on. They were always willing to offer their input and advice about the work being produced, not to mention always pushing us to apply for any and all opportunities - such as volunteering for the previous FORMAT festival.

What are your future plans?

I’m currently working in a job unrelated to the arts but this is only a temporary measure as long term I want to be able to spend time working in photography again.

What would you say to anyone thinking of studying this course at the University of Derby?

Don’t take the time and freedom your lecturers give you for granted, once you leave and have to get a job you will miss being able to just go to the dark rooms or make images whenever you like!
