Debbie Jackson, Sport Studies, 2006

What are you doing now?

I completed the BA Hons Sports Studies  course in 2006 and am now a Senior Development Officer for Team Central at Canoe England, the National Governing Body for Paddlesport in England.

My job involves working within an exciting environment to help maximise the opportunities and support clubs, centres and participants across Central England to develop and expand. This position also involves a line management role for the Team Central Paddlesport Development Officers. This has helped me utilise my sport development experience well.

What were the main reasons you took Sports Studies?

Sport is a passion of mine so I wanted to get a good career in the industry. However I wasn’t confident on the exact path to take so chose Sports Studies as it allowed me to try a variety of avenues and experience the wider aspects of sport.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?

It was like a home from home, a welcoming place with a good history in sporting education.

How would you sum up the experience of studying this course at the University of Derby?

It was great - I was challenged but also supported to do the best that I could. The specific modules I chose to study, really helped get me on the career ladder with the knowledge they gave me. The lecturers offered their time and advice regularly.

How did you find the lecturers and the support they gave you?

Superb. I couldn’t have done it without them!

How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?

The opportunity to do some work experience at David Lloyd Leisure, Milton Keynes during my course was vital to add to my CV. As a result, I landed a summer job as a Fitness Coach which funded my studies (and socialising!) and added to my career history.

What are your future plans?

I would like to stay with Canoe England and work with the next round of Sport England funding. The organisation continues to grow and there are always new challenges round the corner.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

Do it! You won’t look back! I managed to study hard and play hard but with the fantastic support I received, it helped me get where I am today.
