Sophie French - College of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences - University of Derby

Sophie French, Creative Writing & Media Writing, 2011

What are you doing now?

I’m a Freelance Copywriter, Communications Expert & Social Media Maven, and I help companies find and use a tone of voice that suits their brand image, is original to them, and is consistent in all of their communications. I specialise in supporting Coaches, Speakers & Entrepreneurs to create a personal brand that emulates their values and that they can be proud of.

Before I began working for myself, I was Public Relations Manager at Dunelm.

What were the main reasons you took that course?

I always knew I wanted a career in writing, but wasn’t sure what my options were or what I enjoyed the most. This Joint Honours allowed me to explore a variety of options and try them on for size along the way.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?

University was far enough from home (Leicester) to give me space to live on my own, but close enough for when I needed my washing doing...

What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?

It’s had a huge impact on me as it gave me the confidence to apply for the writing jobs and experiences I wanted, which has lead me to where I am today.

How did the lecturers inspire you?

The lecturers inspired me because they were or had been ‘in industry’ and were on hand to offer advice.

How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?

I was accepted as a work experience student in the University of Derby’s Marketing Department, which is where I made the contact who put me forward for an interview for my first ever role in PR, which turned out to be a giant kickstarter to my writing career!

What are your future plans?

To take over the world... Also, to build a team of creative freelancers and support cool, modern, original brands to make a statement. I’d like to travel the world again soon, which luckily I’m able to whilst still working from my laptop!

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

It’s a really insightful, creative and fun jumping off point for anyone who is passionate about writing, and provides you with the key skills required to stand out in the industry.

Who are you still in touch with from University of Derby?

The Alumni Team, a couple of people from my course, my housemates.

Sophie graduated with a Joint Honours degree in Creative Writing combined with Media Writing. She used the skills and experience she gained whilst studying at Derby in her previous role as PR Manager at Dunelm.

"I feel like my Joint Honours degree gave me an edge when applying for roles because I experienced such a vast range of subjects." Sophie French
