Fraser Cunningham, LLB part time

Studying at Derby

Our part-time LLB (Hons) course was the perfect route to a new career for Fraser Cunningham, who has risen to become a partner in the Company and Commercial Department of Smith Partnership Solicitors in Derby.

Having originally left higher education to pursue a career in music, Fraser decided to return to complete a law degree in his thirties. He says: “The modular structure of the Derby LLB and the ability to accelerate the course through taking additional modules in each year was ideal for me.”

Throughout his studies, Fraser worked as a clerk in the criminal department at the Smith Partnership but had always set his sights on rapid career progression. He went on to complete the LPC qualification, subsequently being admitted as a solicitor in December 2004.

Fraser praises the engaging subject matter of the LLB, the extremely supportive lecturers and the excellent courtroom facilities. He particularly enjoyed the commercial modules, which stood him in good stead for his current role which principally involves the buying and selling of businesses.

He concludes: “Without the broad legal understanding and knowledge I gained on the LLB, I could not fulfil my role. I am a firm believer that a broad base of knowledge is essential for any lawyer. It enables you to identify an issue and pass it to an appropriately qualified specialist – without the broad base the issue may never occur to you.

“I would have no hesitation in recommending the University of Derby. It is more than able to stand shoulder to shoulder with many of its more illustrious and established peers.” Fraser Cunningham
