Hana Gill - College of Education - University of Derby

Hana Gill, BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies, 2012

What are you doing now?

Having a degree in Early Childhood studies has opened so many doors to further education and careers working in children and  I've recently qualified as a children’s nurse after completing a graduate entry MSc in Childrens Nursing.

What were the main reasons you took that course?

To further my career within the childcare industry and gain a degree in a field of interest.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?

The University was close to home, but most importantly it felt warm and welcoming.

What impact has studying this course had on your career?

Studying Early Childhood Studies has helped provide the foundations of my knowledge to be able to nurse and interact with children of all ages, appropriate to the age and stage of development.

How did the lectures inspire you?

Studying this course made me believe in myself, encouraging me to aim high and work to the best of my ability. This was reinforced by having supportive lecturers who were always willing to help and provide tutorials when extra support was needed.

How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?

If it was not for this degree I would not have been able to study for my nursing degree via the graduate entry route. Completing my masters in nursing in two years instead of three, as my undergraduate degree provided me with the life skills, intellectual ability and child development knowledge to prove that I have the skills to become a nurse through the fast track route.

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to work my way up the nursing career ladder, with a particular interest in children’s mental health and accident and emergency nursing.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

It is a fantastic course with enthusiastic, supportive lecturers. With the opportunity to choose modules to meet your personal interest in working with children.

Who are you still in touch with from the University of Derby?

I keep in touch with five friends that I met on this course. All of which have chosen different careers from finishing this course, including nursery management, social work and teaching.

Nearly five years after finishing this degree there are lecturers that I still think of within my practice having inspired me in becoming the children’s nurse I have become. These are Jon White, Ruby Oates and Robin Sedgewick. I have emailed Ruby a few times thanking her for the support the Early Childhood Studies course gave me in furthering my career. I have also been back to speak to current students about career options after completion of the course.
