Nick Rose - College of Business - University of Derby

Nick Rose, MSc Marketing Management, 2012

What brought you to Derby?

I came to Derby on the recruitment of Derbyshire Institute of Sport and more specifically, James Maudsley, who was the coach for the Derby trailblazer as well as the University of Derby Men's Basketball Team.

When you arrived in Derby, what were your first impressions of the city and University?

When I arrived in Derby I went straight from the airport to the gym for a practice with the trailblazer. Everyone I met was very welcoming. The city was very confusing to navigate at first but I soon realised I could walk almost anywhere I needed to go, the University was impressive with a very diverse student body.

What course did you do and what elements of the course attracted you to it?

I completed the MSc Marketing Management program at Derby and I was attracted by three small class sizes and the professors of the program. Also there appeared to be a lot of hands on projects that we could get some real world experience.

What were your fondest memories of the University of Derby?

There were a lot of great memories during my time in Derby. On the basketball side, my best memory was beating Loughborough in their gym to advance to the League Championship, and in my MSc programme, the relationships that I established throughout the year. I still communicate with several of my classmates as well as some of my lecturers.

How did you find the basketball programme at University?

I was recruited for this program by coach, Jamie Maudsley, while I was playing basketball for the Washington Generals in the US. He explained the programme and I immediately jumped at the opportunity.

What did you think of the Performance Sport Service you received at the University?

This was an unexpected and amazing benefit of the scholarship programme. I received top level physical therapy and strength training. Between playing for the University and the Trailblazers, I needed to stay on top of my training and conditioning, and the performance sport services allowed me to do that.

What was the best moment of your time here at the University on the Basketball Court?

Again, I would have to say beating Loughborough on their home floor was pretty cool.

How has your time at the University helped you?

I have gone on to become one of three financial advisors at a very successful wealth management firm where I am responsible for designing and implementing marketing strategies for our high net worth clients; as well as managing over $100,000,000 in assets.

My time at the University of Derby not only prepared me for this opportunity but gave me a unique upper hand in the interview process. I frequently lean on my experience at Derby to get me through difficult challenges.

What would be your one piece of advice to someone looking at coming to the University of Derby?

Take full advantage of every opportunity that the University of Derby presents.
