What are you doing now; tell us about your role and your journey since graduation?

I made sure I was applying for jobs at the start of 2014 and landed this role in March 2014. I actually started in post after handing in my dissertation at the beginning of May 2014. Having a job lined up to go straight into after leaving university, gave me the security in my final weeks to concentrate on completing my modules.

My first year at ESG is almost completed – and it’s gone so fast! I love what I do with so many sides to the role; I’m never repeating the same task. I’m involved with market analysis, social media maintenance, website development, marketing material creation (copywriting and branding), internal and external communication and PR.

I am currently taking ESG through a rebranding exercise completely changing the look and feel into a more premium, customer-focused brand.

That’s the beauty of an all-round marketing role and I’m looking forward to pushing myself even further over the next year and have already set myself goals to aim for.

What were the main reasons you took that course?

I went to university a little later than most of my friends, which meant I had time to really decide what my career path was going to be. I knew I wanted a career in Marketing and that a degree from the University of Derby would help me achieve this.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?

I’ve lived within a couple of miles from the University all my life and I have close family who have worked at the University. At the age of 21, a few years older than most, I knew studying at my home university was the right decision for me.

What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?

It’s given me confidence and taught me a great deal about the fundamentals of Marketing. Plus it gave me a really solid knowledge base I’ve been able to build on since I started working.

How did the lecturers inspire you?

The lectures were stimulating and interesting. The staff integrated real-life situations and company problems into modules which made the experience more realistic.

What are your future plans?

My short-term plan is to continue working as hard as possible in my current role. Due to the company growing rapidly, the opportunity to progress quickly is realistic. I’ll be looking to lead the Marketing department within the next few years.

Long term, I would enjoy the freedom of working for myself, so once I have built a large set of connections; I may consider starting my own business.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

I would encourage anyone to study Marketing at the University of Derby. The staff are continually improving the module working collaboratively with industry.

Who are you still in touch with from University of Derby?

I’m always popping back into the University and recently came back to give a talk to a group of Year 2 Marketing students on the Rail industry and my role within it, which was great. I also speak with Bev Crighton, Business and Management lecturer, regularly as I see her at networking and marketing events around Derby.
