Charlotte Fuller - College of Business - University of Derby

Charlotte Fuller, Events Management, 2013

Charlotte studied BA (Hons) Event Management and graduated in 2013.

What are you doing now?

Since graduation I have had two jobs both within the events industry I studied. My first role was a part time Marketing Manager for Life Productions which was to sell our products directly to companies within the child and baby industry. This was a start-up company and unfortunately could not afford to keep me on longer than three months.

I was then interviewed for my role within Jesus College, Cambridge as a Conference and Events Assistant. Jesus College is part of the Cambridge University circle. I work is a small team of three. We are in charge of both external and internal events. We plan a range of events including: dinners, feasts/banquets, conferences, meetings, corporate drinks receptions and weddings. I have been very lucky to be working with such a lovely group of people who are passionate and driven. I work closely with my Manager learning and developing from her style of working.

I work closely with clients to ensure that they are happy with the events we host.

What were the main reasons you took the Event Management course?

Because of the opportunities it had to offer whilst learning. Throughout my course we have had day workshops and talks with some of the industry greatest professionals. I wanted a course that taught in different styles and gave you ‘hands on’ experience. I enjoy working directly with people and create that ‘wow’ event they have always dreamed of.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby Buxton?

I came to the campus for an open day where I was greeted by a great group of people. The lectures made university learning sound fun and interested and created a real passion for me to want to carry on learning and experiencing what they had experienced.

How would you sum up the experience of studying this course at the University of Derby?

The lectures made you feel like your work was the most important that gave each and every student the time they needed and the support they wanted. I have met some truly amazing friends during my time and I can honestly say it was priceless!

How did you find the lecturers and the support they gave you?

The lecturers were a holy grail of experience and knowledge plus they wanted to see you succeed and do they best that you could. Their support was essential and I could not have finished my degree without it. They was always on hand when you had that small moment of doubt or insanity, especially during dissertation writing.

How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?

The students union has helped me grow as person and really believe in myself and what I can do. Both them and my lecturers have provided me with advice and mentoring when looking for work.

What are your future plans?

My future plans include working across the world doing something that I enjoy and that makes me happy. I have only been in this position for 7 months and I don’t know what the future will being but I know I would like to see the world and maybe even one day own my own company.

What would you say to anyone thinking for coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

That the course is brilliant but was makes it amazing and worthwhile is the lecturers and the people you meet whilst studying in Buxton.

The course offers practical experience whilst teaching the academics you need to succeed. The course has many different subject areas and the lectures are able to catering to your learning needs. We were provided with some great in class talks as well as the opportunities to see the events industry in practices with trips.
